DMX Interface Hardware: this is a complete step-by-step description how to access the hardware, and how to set the working parameters required for DMX512/1990. Find memory maps, hardware addresses and other hardware-related stuff.
We offer a range of PC interface cards, not only readily available but affordable and easy to program. Besides we offer ready-to use software packages for free.
Programming of our DMX512 interfaces cards is really simple. Here are the few steps to get things running.
- 512 channels DMX512 Input and output, 480 PMX channels
- converts PMX (RS-232) to DMX (RS-485) and vice versa
- for EVERY computer supporting a standard serial (RS-232) port
- supports Windows 95, 98, Windows 2000
The DMXSPI interface converts serial data from PMX format to DMX format. PMX (Pulsar Multiplex) is a serial data format, which is transmitted on a RS-232 line (mouse port of your computer) and -similar to MIDI- only transmits modified data. DMX512 is a serial protocol, which uses RS-485 levels and transmits 512 slots of data continously and repeatedly, no matter if the data contents change or not.
GENERATING PMX DATA
is easy, since all operating systems and all programming languages support RS-232 access, thus no special driver is needed. You only have to arrange the data to accommodate the PMX format. A description of the PMX Pulsar Multiplex Protocol can be found on Steve Unwin's Website http://www.histon.demon.co.uk/pmx1.htm. Several hardware devices, such as the Pulsar Masterpiece controller or the Clay Paky Golden Scan I, support PMX directly. Software programs, such as ShowMagic (see http://www.showmagic.net) generate PMX output directly from your computer. No additional hardware is needed. The DMXSPI interface can then convert PMX to DMX512.
The 4102A board comes complete with all required connectors onboard. The pcb requires external voltage supply ( 9-12V DC stabilized, approx. 120mA), and is protected against reversed polarity.

A DMX/PMX TEST PROGRAM
To illustrate a DMX to PMX conversion (or PMX to DMX, respectively), a simple test utility can be downloaded from this site. The utility has been written for Windows 98 and transmits or receives data via the 4102A PMX port. To put the interface to work, simply connect the PMX input/output to the mouse/modem port of your computer using a straight 1:1 9pin serial cable.
